I need to change some setting for a yahoo email account on my iPad. How do I do this without losing current emails?

You can find all the email a count settings, for an individual email account, in your iPad Settings:
Settings > Mail > Accounts > [Your email Account] > [Account]
You can access and change your incoming (IMAP or POP3) server settings - and your outgoing (SMTP) settings.
