Repair bent iPad costs

The $49 fee is the standard AppleCare+ service fee.

AppleCare+ is an insurance product; when a claim is made, there is a small excess/deductible charge - and this is the $49 fee that you have been quoted.

Repair or exchange under warranty is free-of-charge. At an iPad “bend” is commonly associated with user mishandling, or damage, the limited warranty will not apply. In absence of AppleCare+ cover, an out-of-warranty repair is typically c.60% of the as new price of the iPad.

As you apparently an active AppleCare+ Plan, being a non-warranty claim, you simply have to pay this reduced fee. In lieu of an actual repair, your iPad will very likely be replaced with a reconditioned iPad of exactly the same model and specification.

So, Apple give you a price, then there is a price included in this. So, take this as a learning experience, knowing to always hand back a device if it is damaged out-of-the-box. Apple probably sees this as damaged, being it has been used. So, contact Apple back, seeing why there is a charge. They'll have the answer upfront.
