Am I reading documents here correctly to say that I cannot use a 2009-era iMac as an external monitor for my M1 chip MacBook Pro? The iMac is in perfect condition.

That is correct.

The 2009 iMac cannot be used as a monitor with the M1 MacBook Pro.
