The 1st and 2nd generation do not support the new Apple TV app with its in-app Channels and Apple TV+. Officially the 2nd generation and earlier are no longer supported. A few things may still work, but incompatibilities will not be fixed.

Quite a few third party services have stopped supporting the 2nd and 3rd generation models.

AirPlay support is fragmented, as some services support 3rd generation or later, and others support 4th generation or later.

MacOS works on Mac computers. it has nothing to do with Apple TV.

To use the Apple TV App on a third generation Apple TV, make sure its updated to the most current TV software it can run which is 7.4. See here: link-> Update your Apple TV - Apple Support

I believe Apple TV software 7.7 was released for Apple TV (3rd generation), somewhere in late April 2021.

Last one there is 7.4.

It would be wise to get the Apple TV 4k model. The HD model is not the entry level model, for a few $ more the 4K model offers a LOT more.
