Can ipad camera be accessed remotely?

I’ve received an email from a hacker claiming that he placed malware on a legitimate website that I visited which gave him access to my ipad screen and camera, then installed a key logger which has given him details of all my gmail, facebook and messenger contacts. He does have at least one of my passwords (since changed). He is demanding payment via bitcoin or he will share my personal information, photos and videos with all my contacts. Is this possible or is it a scam?

iPad, iPadOS 14

Modify Your Credentials:

Of course it is a scam. If you are concerned for these accounts, then modify your credentials on them all, immediately.

Opening a New eMail Account.

Perhaps opening a new eMail account is the best rout to take. You would:

  1. Open: the new eMail Account
  2. Transfer: everything over to it (eMail, Contacts, and all) from your current account,
  3. Edit: your login for all sites pertaining to the eMail address
  4. Close: your current eMail account.

New Passwords:

Start from here with all new passwords, using a different eMail per account. Important: Keep a handwritten, hardcopy of these passwords and store it in a secret location that only you are knowledgable of, and on you have access to.

Modify your Credentials:

Consider modifying your credentials, for Security & Privacy concerns, starting with a new password. Here is how it would work with Apple:

With respect to your three answers:

  1. Too late for that.

2. Too late for that.

3. That doesn’t answer any of the questions I asked.

I reiterate, I am not trying to find ways of preventing FUTURE access to my ipad, I am trying to find out if has been possible in the recent past for a hacker to have either gained access to its camera or to have installed a keylogger.

Thanks for the very quick reply. However, my concern is not so much for my email account, since changing that would still leave the hacker with all of my contacts email addresses etc and, if he really has been able to access my ipad camera and record videos or photos from it and/or copied some from my ipad, he would still be able to send them to all those contacts. That would also apply to my fb and messenger contacts.

I saw a post from about a year ago that said a security flaw in the Safari browser allowed hackers to access the camera by posing as a website that had permission to access it, such as zoom. I’m sure that my ipad wasn’t hacked until earlier this year though (if at all) so, although that old flaw was fixed and my ipad always has the latest updates, has there been another flaw recently that would allow a hacker access to an ipad or its camera, even if it was only a short time before that flaw was fixed.

The one password that the hacker definitely knows was only used on two websites, so he could presumably have got it from one of them, but is it also possible that he got it from a keylogger on my ipad when I logged in to one of those websites? Is it possible to install a keylogger on an ipad? I thought that the way Apple controlled the software for ipads etc, meant that only software approved by them could be installed even if a hacker gained access to the ipad.

You are welcome.

In respect to your three paragraphs:

  1. If you are concerned with someone having access to your data - then modify your credentials.
  2. If you are worried about you camera, then cover it with electrical tape that is doubled-over so that nothing sticky lays atop the camera.
  3. If someone has your information, then they have that information

Why are you so hesitant to make a new eMail address and just use that from this point forward? It's the way I have gone over the years ;)

All the best.
