HLS media (Lossless music) not synching to iPhone

I just upgraded from a 2013 MacBook Pro to a brand new Mac Mini, and converted a lot of my Purchased music into the new Lossless format. However, these new files are not physically synching to my iPhone when I plug it into the computer to synch. They only appear on my iPhone when I synch it with the iCloud.

I want physical copies of music on my iPhone so I don’t need a reliable internet connection to play them (I travel a lot in areas with bad reception), and there’s a lot of playlists I don’t want appearing on my iPhone (but still want on my computer), so basically I don’t want to synch with the iCloud.

So is there a way to physically synch the new Lossless music files to an iPhone, or are they only playable via streaming?

Hi dam2112,

Thanks for following up.

With Apple Music, manual syncing of music is only an option when Sync LIbrary is disabled. However, to add Apple Music tracks to your library from Mac, iCloud Music Library does need to be enabled.

Just to get a better understanding of your setup, can you check if Sync Library is enabled on either your Mac or iPhone? Reviewing resources regarding Apple

Music, Sync Library is intended to be enabled on all devices you are accessing your Apple Music on. This would sync your library automatically, but would not fully download your tracks. You would still have control over which tracks to download to your iPhone locally for storage management. Please review the note in the user guide below which implies automatic syncing using iCloud is expected for intended performance of Apple Music services.

Sync content between your Mac and iPhone or iPad

"Note: If you use iCloud Photos and Apple Music, your photos and music are synced automatically using iCloud. When you click Music or Photos, no options appear for syncing."

It seems that some Apple Music tracks that are downloaded to your Mac can be synced manually with iTunes, but this is partially a benefit of the Apple Music and iTunes Match services. We do notice an error when trying to manually sync tracks that are already downloaded in lossless on the Mac. The best workaround for this at the time would be to download these albums directly on the Music app on the iPhone and they will download based on your iPhone's audio settings.

We would suggest submitting feedback for this use case using the link below.

You could try getting some lossless files from qobuz and see if you can sync them, once you buy the files you can download the music in ALAC or AIFF. If you are able to sync said files that could mean a bug when you try to sync the HLS media, although you can also try to find the HSL media on finder copy it and see if you can add it to the sync media on finder.

Hi dam2112,

Thanks for reaching out using Apple Support Communities. Here to help.

We understand you have questions regarding keeping Lossless music files downloaded onto your iPhone.

Lossless Audio is a feature of Apple Music. The ability to listen to Lossless quality on both devices should not be impacted by your choice not to use iCloud syncing. Your preferred audio quality for tracks played on your iPhone would actually be determined by a setting on the iPhone.

Listen to lossless music on iPhone

Head into Settings > Music > Audio Quality. Here you can designate preferences for using Lossless quality for downloaded tracks, or when streamed over Wi-Fi or Cellular. If you are wanting a Lossless version for music that has already been downloaded, simply remove the download from your device and then download it again.

I’ve turned on Lossless Audio in my iPhone’s settings, however when I plug it into my Mac to synch it, none of the Lossless songs download onto it. I have one playlist that entirely consists of Lossless songs, and it doesn’t even appear in the checklist of playlists that are selectable to synch. It’s as if the iPhone isn’t recognizing HLS Media files as music files at all when connected to my Mac.

Is this possibly an error that needs to be worked out?
