I want to buy an external CD drive for use with late 2012 MacMini. Ads for drives don't mention if they'll work with MacMini & having searched for how they work with Catalina I have only found 2 year old conversations. I would appreciate some guidance aimed a non-techie.

You can plug in any USB external optical drive (CD, DVD, DVD DL, BluRay).
I personally use the Apple SuperDrive because I use DL DVD.

Like already stated any drive should work but if you go with a Blu-ray drive (which I have) you will need to get an app that will play those DVD's like "AnyMP4 Mac Blu-ray player" or similar.

As mentioned, most any USB external DVD/CD drive will work with your 2012 Mac Mini.
If you just want a reliable inexpensive DVD/CD drive for importing music CDs, watching DVD movies and light Disc Burning, then you really do not need anything special.
We have and use an LG USB DVD/CD drive with our 2012 Mac Mini.

If you want to do BlueRay or a lot of Disc Burning, then you will need to get one that is more suited for that.
