Two similar issues:
My Watch is notifying me of text messages and new mail even when I am actively on and using my iPhone.
If I am not actively using my iPhone, and I read a notification on my Watch, my iPhone will still trigger the notification sound once I unlock the screen when I return to using my iPhone.
iPhone: 10 iOS: 14.6
Watch: 6 WatchOS: 7.5

Yes I believe that is basically still working as designed, those message flows and notifications are working independent of each other.

That seems off. Maybe I’m wrong, but if I’m on my phone, my watch has never notified me before of a new message. It only occurred when my phone was “inactive,” for lack of a better term.
To me, the notifications worked as a relay system, not as two independent systems.
