Replacements for Airport Express with AirPlay for Optical Audio Out
I have four Airport Express units and they are fantastic and served a good life. Three where the older 1-port and one is the newer 2-port ethernet version. One of the 1-port units (AirPlay name Patio) recently died and won't power on any more. I am now down to three. I've been researching solutions on google but maybe someone here has options I haven't seen before. (Apple speakers are a pass, no offense if you have one but I would consider myself an audiophile and the sound quality just does not compare to a true dedicated music or movie system).
Why Airport Express?
I loved these mini devices because 1) they could join my Orbi WiFi network and the local ethernet ports would bridge the network for non-WiFi devices and 2) provided optical digital outputs (in addition to analog) for AirPlay. I use optical because I run my own high-end DACs. In one other cases I kept an old non-4K AppleTV with HDMI and Optical out for the same reason so I could use the optical connection for AirPlay.
These also did not break the bank. I could replace each function by getting some sort of WiFi to ethernet bridge and a 3rd party AirPlay device (must have Toslink). its less than optimal since I now need to power 2x the number of devices. I'm preparing for the inevitable end when my last AirPort Express device will drop dead.
