Why can't I receive/send texts via my Mac to my iPhone any longer

My text messages stopped syncing with my iPhone even though both devices are shown as having text messages linked to my Mac. I can now send text messages from iPhone only - no longer can send or respond to messages from my laptop. I really need the flexibility to write or respond to all text messages received on my iPhone by using my Mac as I'm generally using it throughout the day for my work.
