Watch green exercise ring

Why doesn’t my watch record my full exercise to close the green ring? I walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes. My watch records the activity, the mileage, my heart rate and everything, except the full exercise time. After a 30 minute workout it will only record 8 minutes of exercise.
