Looping with Acoustic Instruments (two or more channels per loop)

There appears to be a major gap in Logic's looping function. I spoke with a specialist and she was unable to solve this problem. I am recording acoustic piano and have two mics, left and right. I do not want to record them with the "Stereo" function, because that automatically sets the panning to hard left and hard right. So there are two tracks for every recording I make (left and right mics), and I have them grouped together with the Group function.

This is all well and good when recording in the "Arrangement" window. But in loops it does not work. There appears to be no way to simultaneously record loops in two different tracks. Now, as a pianist I could record in mono or accept panning that cannot be edited (what is the lesser of two evils?). But how would a drummer record loops with all the different mics they need? (Also, similar problems crop up with the playback function of loops, although this is not as much of an issue.) Thoughts?

I am running Mojave on MacBook Pro (mid-2015); Logic 10.5.1

Yes, that is what happens when you record a stereo Track.

However, you can just use the Pan Knob on the Channel Strip in Balance Mode or Stereo Pan Mode (right-click on Pan Knob). This is independent if you use the Arrange Window or Live Loops.

Any other independent processing of the Stereo Signal is possible by selecting only the left or right channel (long-click on the Channel Mode Button.

You can even load Plugins in Dual Mono Mode to process the left and right channel individually.

Hope that helps,

I still wonder how drummers might deal with the issue, since two channels is not sufficient for them. I'm thinking there might be a way to record multiple loops simultaneously with the Logic Remote app.

If you record an instrument (i.e., drums, horn section, etc.) with multiple microphones that should end up as a stereo file/loop, then you just do a submix to stereo or Bounce in Place.

Thank you very much, Edgar! The tracks will be exported to an engineer who uses Sonar, but the panning can be adjusted before exporting, as you have explained. So this should solve my dilemma.

Thanks again.
