Apple Music Lossless library swapping back to AAC

I spent hours rebuilding my Apple Music library swapping out most songs with apple lossless

(because it sounds amazing) and rebuilding all my playlists.

After a day or so the lossless version is replaced with the aac version again,

Did it already twice . . . 8 hours spent in vain?

I am doing the rebuilding library with my iPad which is connected to a 24 bit 96 Khz audio interface,

because my MacBook Pro running on Mojave doesn't give me that option. Listening to my library with my iPhone (without an external audio interface) through good wired headphones, it will play the 44 kHz audio files, then next day back to the 256 AAC quality. My headphones are a Beyer Dynamics Pro Studio set and I can hear the difference really good.

What steps am I missing to have my library remember the lossless format?

All devices music preferences are set to lossless and I don't want to go back to AAC.

Thank you for your reply.

The issue is not me not knowing how to set my devices to lossless audio.

I am so thankful to be able listen to lossless audio now, I am an audio engineer / musician and it is a dream come true!

But here is the problem:

1.) my iPad Air (latest version) is set to High-Resolution LosslessALAC up to 24-bit/192 as described above and connected to a 24 bit 96 kHz self powered audio interface via the apple camera kit

I create a (large) playlist with available 24 bit 96 kHz files and it streams all songs in that format and sounds really good through my studio set up.

2.) I access my iTunes library with my iPhone which cannot play those 24 bit 96 kHz files the next day,

the iPhone will stream the ALAC 44.1 or 48 kHz files instead through a good set of wired studio headphones which sounds great also.

3.) when going back to my iPad the songs are not playing in 24 bit 96Khz anymore, nor in 44.1 or 48 kHz,

they are swapped out for the old 256 kbps AAC files!

  • the iPad never was disconnected from that external audio interface set to 24 bit 96 kHz or connected to bluetooth to my AirPods Pro or anything like that.

4.)somehow when listening to my library on another device it will swap out the 24 bit 96 kHz with 256 kbps AAC files in my Apple Music library. I can hear the difference and when looking it does not have the lossless icon next to the artwork on the iPad. I then have to delete those albums and songs in my library and add the 24 bit 96Khz versions again and rebuild the playlist all over to play them in the lossless 24 bit 96Khz format.

Then it works again in 24 bit 96Khz until the next day when the 256 kbps AAC files of those songs are in place again.

I don't want to nag too much over this, we all listened for so long to 256kbps files and it was fine, but now getting the taste of this awesome sound quality of 24 bit 96Khz I would like to really use this as much as possible.

My understanding is that the stream will be depending on each device's settings - music - audio- audio quality - High Resolution Lossless and my iPad is set to that, yet it streams 256kbps files over my home fast wifi connection, although the songs are available in that 24 bit 96Khz format. Is there something I am missing?

Maybe it has something to do with my Apple Music library also residing on my Macbook Pro's 10.14.6 Mojave. My two Macbook Pro's, my two iPads and my iPhone are all synced to the same library. All devices are on the latest IOS 14.6. Unfortunately I cannot update my Macbook Pro's to Big Sur, because my DAW (MOTU Digital Performer) will not work with Big Sur (yet) and I need this in the studio on a daily basis. Are my Macbook Pro's on OS 10.14.6 Mojave responsible for swapping out the High-Resolution LosslessALAC up to 24-bit/192 files to 256 kbps AAC files in my Apple Music library on all my devices?
