27" iMac Hard Drive Fan Problem

I have a 27" iMac with 3.06ghz processor 1tb hdd and 4gb of ram purchased around march and I am having a weird problem with the hard drive fan. I brought it to the genius bar and they said the problem was with a program i was running(I dont believe them). I find the problem to be strange. I keep my computer running all the time and restart from time to time but rarely shut down. I noticed that the fan was running at high rpm's and they only solution was to shut down and restart would do nothing to resolve the problem. Then I noticed up in the next week that the same problem was happening. I started noticing a trend it was happening at the same time every week on the same day. I look up if there is anything in Activity Monitor causing the problem and I find nothing. Currently the only apps I have running mostly are Google Chrome, Mail, Adium, Itunes, Echofon and Dropbox. I wouldn't think that any of these apps are causing this problem. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this problem? Any help will be appreciated.

Hi guys!

I have an iMAC MID 2011. HDD was so slow for me. Changed to SSD (Crucial M500 960 GB). Then had same issue with the HDD fan, as all of you. Reasearch over the internet was a bunch of apps or commands etc... and still somehow the issue remains.

I did following and it works GREAT (no noise, no app):

1. CLEAN the insides thoroughly with compressed air and hair dryer.

2. Put SSD as it is, no enclosure no nothing at the original HDD spot. You have to drill a hole in the top support, which is screwed to your original HDD to accomodate the SSD. I only attached the SSD with the two original screws from the HDD. This is enough!!!

3. When motherboard is out of the imac, take out the HDD fan and remove the plastic barrier to the fans right.

(only the horizontal part of it). Bend it back and forth exactly at the angle where it goes up and separates the ODD drive airflow. This whole procedure leaves enough space behind the motherboard to "breathe" and allows the warm air from behind the motherboard to rise (Physics...) and exit via the top.

(The single SSD doesn't obstruct the natural airflow neither.)

Result: My iMac is barely warm after hours of usage...

Time? 1 hour of work! 😉

FIXED THE ISSUE.... This took a little time, but it was a simple fix. The LCD sensor that you have to disconnect from before removing the LCD was the issue. After receiving HIGH CPU fan speeds, I began looking at possible issues. First, I had [http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/12381/temperature-monitor|Temperature Monitor] Installed. I had all my sensors including the ambient air sensor reading. After I upgraded my HD to a SSD I started getting HIGH CPU fan speeds, but the HD and DVD fan speeds were fine. I looked at my Temperature Monitor and I noticed i had several Temperature Monitors not reading including the ambient Air Temperature (bare with me, these are steps to troubleshoot). After reseting the SMC and PRAM, still nothing. I shut down and disassembled my IMAC again. This time after i removed the LCD, I looked at the LCD cable that you must disconnect when removing the LCD and BAM, I saw the issue. The wires that connect to the Motherboard from the LCD Sensor, inherently like to lay across the screw hole the Bezel attaches to. I have a couple of pinched marked that exposed the wires and when I tighten the bezel down, it shorted the wires and caused the issue. I cut small pieces of electrical tape and covered the bare spots. When I reassembled the IMAC, i made sure that all my BEZEL screw holes were completely clear of any wires. Once back together, I plugged in the IMAC, waited 5 Seconds and turned it on. All is well. I feel this a majority of everyones issues when they take apart their IMACS and put them back together. THe Fan Control SOftware is good, but this was my solution that worked. Hope this helps.
