Apple watch not marking messages as read

When you unpaired your Watch and set it back up did you restore from a backup or set it up as new? You might want to try to set it up as new and see if that helps. - Set up your Apple Watch.

We are happy to help with the issue you are having with marking your messages as read on your Watch. "If the message arrived a while ago, touch and hold the top of the screen, swipe down on the display to see the message notification, then tap it. To mark the message as read, scroll down, then tap Dismiss. To dismiss the notification without marking the message as read, press the Digital Crown."
