want a 2nd iCloud email address to separate work and the rest of life.
Alias doesn't set up a second email address and folders. So what is the alternative that enables me to have these emails on my apple devices. Gmail ?

You can create up to three 'email aliases' which deliver into the inbox alongside the main address. Then you can set up a 'Rule' to move any messages sent to that address into a separate mailbox you've created. Click the cogwheel icon at bottom left on the Mail page of the iCloud website and choose 'Rules'.

When sending you can specify which address you want as the 'From' address.
