Help! Target Display mode does not work! I just spent $80 on apple cables (Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, plus thunderbollt cable) and I cannot connect my 2011 Imac to my 2019 Macbook Air. They both meet the OS requirements, but nothing works. I have tried everything. I no longer know what to do

If you MBA is running Big Sur it will not work. You would need to back date it to Catalina.
To be honest, if it were me I'd return the expensive cables and use that money and buy an external display (about $100) for the MBA. This solution is dead reliable and far easier to maintain. Please remember, Macs are computers and were never intended to be external monitors for other devices.

Is the iMac 100% functional, it must be in order to work in TDM. Also when you got it did you prepare it per the directions What to do before selling or giving away your Mac, these two points are imperative!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you! My MBA is running on Mojave, so it would have to work. Unfortunately I can't find what the problem is. Yes I agree, I would have done the same thing, but a friend gave me the Imac she no longer used and I thought I could use it somehow. :/

The current OS for the imac is El Capitan 10.11.6 and for the MacBook Air Mojave 10.14.6
The MacBook Air model is a (Retina, 13-inch, 2019) and the imac is a 21.5 inch mid 2011 model
Yes, the imac is working perfectly, however I did not prepare it as it says in that link yuo sent me! That is great!
