iPad microphone works in Siri but not Zoom/other apps (NOT a privacy/permissions issue)

The microphone is enabled in Settings and permissions for each app have been granted for the microphone. If I go to maps and lookup a local business, then tap the button to call, the person on the other end cannot hear me. I haven't tried Facetime but I'm pretty sure it won't work. I've checked and rechecked Settings and rebooted (powered off and back on) the iPad. Siri can hear me and responds but when I tell her to call someone, she doesn't - and very briefly, a microphone icon - in red - pops up at the top right corner of the screen. Anyone have any idea what's going on (and how to fix it?)

Okay. This is the only support document that Apple provides regarding the microphone. If the microphones on your iPhone aren't working - Apple Support If you have done everything there, the only other alternative I would have is to use the Get Support link at the top of the page here and contact Apple Support. Or, if you have an Apple Store close by, make a Genius Bar appointment to have the device looked at.
