Hide Unused Audio Output Options from Volume Task Bar Menu

I have a 27" Dell external display connected to my MBP. Although the display does not have internal speakers, it is nevertheless showing up as an audio output option in the menu bar (see attached picture--"DELL U2719D").

macOS defaults to this option whenever my AirPods are disconnected and it's annoying to have to change back. I tried using the Audio MIDI Setup app to remove/disable this output, but the – icon is disabled and I'm unable to do so.

Any known workarounds?
