Macbook Pro 2012 Late A1425 - Working so slow after SSD Upgrade

Hi everyone,

I upgraded ssd of my mac and I don't know why it works too slow now. Even Google Chrome works too slow. It initialize very fast but when I open an app, I see spinning ball all the time in any app.

And it gets hot all the time. I live in a hot city (Antalya - sometimes up to 40 Celcius.) Hot weather also effects but there is something wrong with my mac.

I always see the spinning ball. I investigated and some people suggest to changing the hard drive cable. I also did EtreCheck test.

Like Leroy, I am concerned that there is something seriously incompatible with the SSD your purchased and a Retina MBP based on theses scores:

Performance:

System Load: 2.85 (1 min ago) 2.71 (5 min ago) 4.79 (15 min ago)

Nominal I/O speed: 6.34 MB/s

File system: 95.28 seconds

Write speed: 15 MB/s

Read speed: 143 MB/s

The badly under-spec 5400rpm rotational HDs installed in 2012 non-Retina would do 70-80 MP/sec. 15MB/sec indicates imminent death. A 95-second value for file system is getting very close to the point where the test times out. That could indicate that the SSD is not properly seated in its socket, or a bad socket.

Consider enabling TRIMForce, followed by several Safe mode boots.

Yes, it did improve dramatically but is still not on expected performance for that drive class:

Performance:

System Load: 22.92 (1 min ago) 16.00 (5 min ago) 7.15 (15 min ago)

Nominal I/O speed: 11.94 MB/s

File system: 38.78 seconds

Write speed: 90 MB/s

Read speed: 443 MB/s

File Systems is one-third of before and your Read speeds are close to optimum for an SATA 6 SSD; both are good news.

However your Write speed is still slower than some rotational drives. I had a similar issue with an aftermarket SSD in my Mid 2012 MBP where the write speed dropped. Enabling TRIM did not immediately have any effect.

I did a safe boot several time, finally letting the computer sit for a while after entering safe mode. That is supposed to give the system time to do cleanups and indexing that TRIm allows. Still no immediate gratification so I set the computer aside for a few days and worked on other things. Coming back to it, I found the write scores were fully restored and it has stayed on nominals since.

Nominals for a 6GB/sec SSD are read/write both at roughly 500MB/sec ± about 10 percent. So you have made progress.

Another observations: I do not think you have the resources for Chrome:

Top Processes Snapshot by CPU:

Process (count) CPU (Source - Location)

system_profiler (2) 57.86 % (Apple)

Google Chrome Helper (Renderer) (15) 47.72 % (Google, Inc.)

trustd (4) 30.60 % (Apple)

Google Chrome Helper (GPU) 23.50 % (Google, Inc.)

WindowServer 22.82 % (Apple)

Top Processes Snapshot by Memory:

Process (count) RAM usage (Source - Location)

Google Chrome Helper (Renderer) (15) 1.43 GB (Google, Inc.)

system_profiler (2) 629 MB (Apple)

EtreCheckPro 546 MB (Etresoft, Inc.)

mdworker_shared (26) 269 MB (Apple)

Google Chrome 207 MB (Google, Inc.)

You cannot add RAM so any app or process that is using near 20% of your limited RAM is a problem. If you cannot give up Chrome in favor of FireFox or Safari, at least quit it when it is not in use. Even left open in the background, it and its many minion "helpers" seem to circumvent Apples very smart memory management.

The first question I have is— did you change the SATA cable at the same time?

Maybe the retina shipped with a SSD and is pcie/nvme and therefore there is no SATA cable here. (?)

Upgrade the SSD— Apple decided to use a proprietary connector for the SSD .

This is a known weak link when changing SSD, especially the mid-2012. Don't see as many late-2012 retina's posted here, but I would consider.

No I did not change the sata cable.

Considering this is retina model I suspect Apple use a proprietary connector for the SSD, therefor no SATA .

Where did this new SSD come from (?)—reputable suppliers typically have a guarantee on compatibility...

I would at least Try resetting the SMC https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

Those new scores look 100 percent appropriate to the SSD's specs. Well-played!

Regarding heat. Oh yes! It is supposed to hit 109F today in my part of the northwest United States.

I am not sure why this processes are using so much CPU:

Top Processes Snapshot by CPU:

Process (count) CPU (Source - Location)

mdworker_shared (35) 133.85 % (Apple)

system_profiler (2) 71.28 % (Apple)

trustd (4) 49.44 % (Apple)

You have some system mods (IntelHaxem) and other third-party stuff I do not recognize. "mdworker" processes are part of Spotlight, so it was still indexing after the restart. However, system_profiler should not be so hungry. Make sure the "About this Mac..." window is not open in the background.

Things that may be significant to the heat issue:

  • I have no idea what "Watchman" does. Why is it installed?
  • MegaUpdates has been fingered as troublesome before, and I suspect MegaSynch as well.
  • Try turning off the VPN. Cheap/free VPNs are causing more problems than they fix.

We may still have a chance to get this completely sorted online but it may be tomorrow morning befoe I can check back. But I will be back!

Yes it is 13inch Retina model. And this is the SSD that I implemented --> https://www.amazon.de/INDMEM-512GB-kompatibel-MacBook-Retina/dp/B08DFGYHTL/ref=sr_1_3?__mk_de_DE=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&dchild=1&keywords=ssd+for+macbook+pro+a1425+emc+2557&qid=1621233946&sr=8-3

I have never heard this brand name before— however that does not necessarily point to the issue.

It states clearly it should be compatible: INDMEM SATA SSD 512GB kompatibel für MacBook Pro Retina 13 inch Late 2012 A1425

but obviously you are not getting anywhere near the:

OWC has international suppliers if this turns out to be the issue:

So I am working with React Native for Mobile Application Development.

For Android, I use Android Studio. The first thing you mentioned is a package in Android studio.

For IOS, I use XCode. (second thing you mentioned)

Android Studio and Xcode are heavy programs. But as a developer I need them both. Before I implemented the SSD , I just had Android Studio but it was working better than now.
