iTunes does not recognise iPod when connected

When I connect my iPod Classic to iTunes on my laptop which uses Windows iTunes doesn't recognise the iPod. Sometimes if I come out of iTunes and go back in it works but not today. I also tried connecting via a different port. No luck. Very frustrating.
