How do I get my laptop to recognise my iphone when I plug it in via a USB lead?

my macbook pro usb ports not recognising my ipad or iphone when connected.

also itunes not reconising any devices when connected to my mac book pro

Please help. i need to back up my ipad and iphone

You could also back up your iPhone wirelessly via iCloud following the steps here.
