Gmail shortcuts not working in Safari (working fine in Chrome) on Mac

Gmail shortcuts - Command I, Command B, Command U, Command Z...etc. don't work when using gmail on Safari. This happened spontaneously. I didn't update anything. I didn't change anything. I have gmail shortcuts turned out. The shortcuts are doing something - just not what they're supposed to be doing - They're bringing up weird incorrect functions. Command I for example starts a verification process for Microsoft Word and tries to open Outlook. I'm running Catalina 10.15.7 and I'm on a MacBook Pro. I've seen that other people had this problem in the past but only one or two people responded and the topic was closed so I'm thinking they solved the issue. Can anyone suggest a solution?

Go step by step and test.

1. Quit Safari, launch Safari holding the Shift key down.

2. Startup in Safe Mode. https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/start-up-your-mac-in-safe-mode-mh21245/mac.

It also does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to using First Aid in Disk Utility

And it deletes some system caches, including font caches and

the kernel cache, which are automatically created again as needed

3. Clear History

Please read the article before clearing history,

this is like a low level resetting of Safari without affecting passwords and bookmarks.
