Apple Pencil 2nd Generation completely dead

After 1.5 months of use, my Apple Pencil 2nd Generation is completely dead. Two weeks ago, I noticed that it was intermittently dropping connection to my 2021 iPad Pro 12.9, and I'd have to restart the iPad to get it to pick up. I know it was the Pencil because other Bluetooth devices and wireless connections would not drop.

Summary of dismay:

  • Will not charge
  • Will not show up in Bluetooth/Other Devices
    • I'd followed Apple Supports steps to unpair and re-pair the Pencil, thinking that would solve the problem
  • Apple Pencil is not a device listed anywhere in Apple's Support catalog that I've been able to find as a casual Support user, so there's no way to directly get support for it in a chat or to tag this article appropriately

It's a $130 device. I'd really hoped it'd last longer. But my main question now is:

Where do I send it for recycling, because it's just a dead piece of hardware.

First, if the Pencil has failed within its one-year warranty, you should seek assistance from Apple - preferably at an Apple Store where the technicians will be able to test and assess both your iPad and Pencil. If your Pencil has failed within its warranty period, Apple will usually exchange it without quibble.

Alternatively, Apple Support can be contacted using the Get Support link at top-right of this page. You can also get help using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, it can be downloaded from the App Store:

As for recycling, the best way to responsibly recycle Apple devices is to return them to an Apple retail store. Clearly, you may wish to explore replacement of your Pencil before you consign it for recycling - as without the corpse, you’ll not be able to seek replacement.

Yeah, I had a long session with support.

I currently have in my possession:

1 2021 iPad Pro 12.9 5th Gen

2 Apple Pencil 2nd Generation

I purchased a second Apple Pencil this morning thinking that it was the Pencil. Neither Pencil works on the iPad. Support still thinks it’s the Pencil, and I’m taking everything in for service tomorrow.

My theory right now is that the magnetic charger on the iPad no longer triggers the Apple Pencils to become discoverable by Bluetooth, though the magnet itself still works.

Thanks for the tips, LotusPilot.

If I remember correctly, I may have bought a refurbished Pencil (purchased through Amazon, and though it doesn't state it was a refurb in my order history, the price listed is $107). So I may be out of luck with a direct Apple replacement. I'll attempt to contact support directly, as I've exhausted every means of troubleshooting this issue on my own.
