From you post we can see you've been using Status icons and symbols on your iPhone and you have a question about the upper left window above the volume buttons.


From what you've described, it sounds like your iPhone is in silent mode: How to put your iPhone on vibrate, ring, or silent mode. This guide has a great visual to see it, and describes what's the difference between Ring mode and Silent mode too.
