Yes, Mac is an abbreviation for Macintosh.

It’s a type of apple.

Historically, the initital Apple computers were simply known as Apple I, Apple II, and Apple III.

Macintosh was a marketing name given to the next generation … i.e. “a different breed of apple”

For whatever reason, Mac has somehow “stuck” for 40 years.

It wasn't really a trend though, its predecessor was Lisa. (Or did you forget about that one?)

I looked it up but I honestly don’t recall them.
