Big Sur Desktop Window Size & Location Problem

Since upgrading to Big Sur (currently on v11.4) a few months ago, my M1 doesn't remember the size and location of windows on the Finder desktop and in Safari.

Any windows opened after minimizing and saving it in the Dock, now open as a default in the bottom left side of my display screen and are smaller - irregardless of where I last placed them and I set larger in size. There is no "Remember Size and Location" option in Preferences, at least nothing that I have been able to find.

It has not affected Firefox, only those two particular Apple applications, but also may affect other Apple applications that I'm just not aware of.

A small issue to be sure, but something I took for granted until it was taken away.

Anyone have a fix for this?

If you're still having problems give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to nearly twice as long as a normal boot as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Hi there J.D. Dworkow,

Thanks for joining us in Apple Support Communities! We understand you're asking how to maintain the same window size for apps on your Mac. We're glad you're here, and we can help.

Have you tried restarting your Mac to see if that helps? If not, let's go ahead and give that a try. If needed, learn how here:

Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac

If restarting doesn't help, let's try some troubleshooting steps to isolate the issue. Open Safari, then manually adjust the window to your preferred size. Afterwards, quit Safari by choosing Safari > Quit Safari from the menu bar in the app. Relaunch Safari and let us know if the window opens to the same size you had manually adjusted it to. Have a look at this link for details:

Manage windows on Mac

You'll also want to take a closer look at what's selected for the minimize windows section of your Dock & Menu Bar preferences:

Change Dock & Menu Bar preferences on Mac

Let us know what you find, and we'll continue working together to sort this out from there.

Cheers.

J.D. Dworkow ,

Thanks for following up with us and giving those steps a try. Let's try some additional troubleshooting steps to see if we can get to the bottom of this.

Next, try resetting the NVRAM on your Mac to see if that makes a difference:

Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac

If the issue persists, let's try isolating it a bit further using safe mode. Follow the steps here to boot your Mac up in safe mode:

How to use safe mode on your Mac

Let us know if the issue continues in safe mode or not, and we'll go from there.

Take care.
