Export edited, (modified), 4K video out of Photos desktop app.

How can I export my edited 4K videos out from Photos Version 6.0 (350.0.100)?

They were imported with a bunch of photos and they play just fine. The videos even edit very nicely in the Edit mode. Now I want to export them to an external SSD, but they won't go.

I bought Final Cut Pro, but I'm just starting to learn it. Photos edit my 4K videos really nice.

I tried File > Export > Export 1 video... but nothing happens. When I click on the Progress Circle at the top of Photos it shows "Preparing edit with Quicktime Player...: 0%. Nothing more.

I tried selecting and dragging out the edited video into a folder on the desktop, but nothing happens there either. Not even a warning dialog box telling me I can't do that, or to try something different.

I spent a lot of time editing 9 Videos in Photos, but need to deliver them to an external SSD.

I'm currently running: macOS Big Sur version 11.4 (20F71)

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017) with 4.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 and 48 GB 2400 MHz DDR4

iMac Internal SSDs, and a Radeon Pro 580 8 GB.

Hi

How long are you waiting for the export to take place. It will take a long time, because to export the edited version, the whole file will need to be re-encoded together with the edits. For 4K (and depending on the length of the video and performance of your mac) this could take hours.

EDIT - I've just checked a 4K from my iPhone 12, and get an immediate error if I try to export a video that has been edited. I'm now trying to export with the edits removed.

EDIT2 - Exporting an unedited file (but using standard export rather than export unmodified) takes about 3 minutes for a one minute file. This on a mac with similar processor to yours, but less ram. However if I apply any edits at all, I get "unknown error" when trying to export.

Ya, that's what I got also. Thanx Tony!

I wonder if there's ANY way to save the edits I have made and save the final versions out of Photos. Maybe through the Terminal? Sounds like this procedure wasn't written in the macOS to handle 4K video files out of the Photos app. I was actually surprised and happy with what Photos could do with the videos.

My iMac is from 2017. I'm just a beginner with video now. I want to get a new Video Editing mac for the Final Cut Pro I just bought. Like iMac, MacBook Pro, or even a souped-up Mac Mini with the Apple Silicon M1 or M2, or MX, whichever I can afford.

Would you have knowledge on which machine to get or know where to point me?

Personally if I'm working with video, I do all my edits in iMovie. It has reasonable tools for adjusting tones/contrast/saturation etc.

If you are going to be using final cut, then you shouldn't to any edits in photos. Final cut will be a much better video processor.
