hello, I was given an apple watch series 1 handed down by many many people and it is activation locked. I do not know the original owner and cannot contact them at all. is there any way I or an apple employee can unlock it?

You'll need to get in touch with the previous owner, otherwise, the Watch is useless to you.
The person that you bought this watch from needs to follow all the steps in this link;
Prepare the watch so the buyer can use it.
If they can't or won't then get your money back or recycle the watch and put it down to experience.
