Please help us help you. Update what? The Mac OS? Something else? We are not good at guessing!
Any Mac's upgrade path is solely dependent on its model and sub-model. Please do "About this Mac..." from your Apple menu and tell us what is show for:
Model
Sub-model including screen size
macOS version installed.
Example:
With those we can effectively give you your options. Without it, we cannot help.
