“Document already exists” error

I made a new spreadsheet today, using my own template, which I have used several times. I renamed (re-saved) the spreadsheet as a document. When I went to look for that document it was not in my list. So I recreated it and tried to save it again with the original document name. I keep getting an “already exists” error even though a document by that name still is not visible in my list. How do I fix this?

Okay. "I have no option to overwrite" was not mentioned in your original post. Can you save it under a different name, at least temporarily, so you don't lose your work? Then the usual first thing to try is to quit then restart Numbers. If not that then reboot. When it comes to glitches/bugs, the solution often comes down to trial and error until something works.

Is this not the message you see or is this the message but the "replace" button does not work?

Did you navigate to the location listed in the message yourself using Finder? I ask only to clarify if by "I do a search" you meant you used Spotlight or Finder's search bar or if you searched by hand. English is not a precise language; the same word can mean different things and different words can mean the same thing.

I am kinda wondering what happened to the first one you saved. I am hopeful rebooting your computer (which will reboot Finder) will make it appear.

The "already exists error" is highly likely not an error, it is a warning telling you the file already exists on your hard drive (or wherever you saved it) and if you save this file with the same name in the same place it will overwrite the existing file. You said you saved a file by the same name so it is very likely that's the file that will be overwritten.

If "my list" is the Recent Items list, that is not the definitive list of what is on your HD. It does not always register all "recent" files, for whatever reason I do not know. Use Finder to look for your document in the folder you saved it in. I am willing to bet it is there, it just did not appear on the recent items list for some reason. Or just overwrite it with your new file and maybe this time it will appear on the list.
