autofill in numbers macOS

I have a small spreadsheet in Numbers 11.1 (7031.0.102) on MacOS 11.3.1 (but I can use the same spreadsheet on my iPad Pro and my iPhone).

I have a column with dates in it, which I want to increment by a week.

All good so far.

Then it gets to a certain row on the sheet and I cannot drag past that row. Whilst I'm holding down the mouse button, there's a brown box outlining the rows which have been autofilled and that box cannot be moved. When I release the mouse button, the brown box disappears or maybe it changes to a green outline - I can't tell.

I have two questions, please:

  1. What is that brown box?
  2. How do I remove it?

I'm happy for a solution on any device - MacOS, iPadOS, or iOS, all of which are the latest releases and all software is up to date.

Thanks for your time!

A couple of suggestions to help identify the problem:

1- If you haven't already done so, have a look at Help > Numbers Help in your menu. Try a search there for "fill" or "autofill."

2- See if you get the same behavior in new table or a new document.

Here is one way to increment a series of dates by a week:

-- Insert the first set of dates manually. Let's say in A2, A3, and A4.

-- Then in A5 I enter =A2+7, and fill that one formula down the column.

So if you started with dates on, say, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, you'll end up with incremental Monday, Wednesday, and Friday dates as far down as you fill or copy (command-c, select the range down the column, command-v to paste) the formula.

  1. “Help” tells me the same thing as you do. And I am fairly certain that I have been doing that correctly.
  2. I’ll come back to this.
  3. Thanks for the description of another way to get the dates added incrementally.

Something I noticed now:

  • If I’m in the ‘table’ and I select a row, then I select Row Actions, I can’t add any rows above or below the selected row.
  • If I select the row immediately below the ‘table’, then I select Row Actions, I can add a row below the selected row, but not above it.
  • if I go further down the sheet and select a row, then select Row Actions, I have the option of adding rows both above AND below the selected row.

My question now is, is that how it should be?

While I send you this, I’ll attempt the suggestion that you made which I said that I’d come back to.

Again, thank you! And I’m sorry that I’m so frustrating for you.

To drag down on a single formula to put it in additional rows, select the lowest row that has that formula then drag down on the little yellow dot at the bottom of the green selection box around the cell. The box will turn yellow (yellowish-brown as I see it) as you drag down, indicating which cells will get the formula. When you let go, all the cells that were in that box will have the formula and the box around them will be green, indicating that they are all selected. That's how it is supposed to work.

You describe not being able to drag the box past a certain row. Is it the last row of the table? If it is that, add more rows to the table first. If it is not that, is there anything special about that row that you can tell? I have been unable to duplicate that problem so far, except for the last row.

Is the "brown" box not going away? You said it goes away when you release the mouse button but you asked how to remove it.

Some additional info for completeness: If you have a pattern of formulas (not all the same formula), you can select the cells in the pattern and drag down with them all and it will duplicate the pattern as it goes.

Thanks for your reply, @Badunit.

I think that you have described the boxes better than I did! Essentially they are the same thing that you have described as what I’m seeing. You just used the right words - thank you.

Your next question:

If it is that, add more rows to the table first. If it is not that, is there anything special about that row that you can tell?

Adding more rows is how I got the extra rows initially. No, I can’t see anything special about the row or the cell in particular.

You asked:

You describe not being able to drag the box past a certain row. Is it the last row of the table?

How can I tell if it’s the last row of the table? There are certainly rows below it, but what determines whether they are part of the table or not?

You asked about the brown box:

What is the box? What is its function? I cannot drag the yellow circle at the centre bottom of the brown box any further than the ‘last row’.

Then you stated:

Some additional info for completeness: If you have a pattern of formulas (not all the same formula), you can select the cells in the pattern and drag down with them all and it will duplicate the pattern as it goes.

What I’m trying to fill is a series of weekly dates. Nothing very complicated, I hope!

Thanks again.

Not sure what you mean by row immediately below the 'table.' Rows are alway 'in' tables, not below them. A screenshot would help.

Shift-command-4, select area of screen you want, and release keys. Then in new post here, click the 'mountains' icon and insert the image.

I copied the whole table and then pasted it into a new spreadsheet.

I was then able to perform the operations that I was unable for do in the original sheet.

I’m working on my iPad at the moment, and I’m unable to get the autofill to work. It was working on the original spreadsheet but it wouldn’t let me go past that row.

I have deleted the sheet in the original spreadsheet and then copied back the sheet data from the new spreadsheet and so far, everything seems to be working as you have described.

Maybe there was a corruption issue with that sheet. I don’t know.

For now, it seems to be solved. Thank you for your patience with me today.
