Apparently the thing was supposed to be ok, but I have had several sd cards (I'm a photographer) and none of it have ever been read by the built in card reader.

If it has "never worked" since 2015 I would not hold your breath. System information shows it is recognized...
SDcard readers have always been finicky at best.
Shine a light in the port and if you see debris in there, clean it out—machine shut down, non-metallic object (toothpick), soft vacuum etc and see if that makes a difference.

External SDcard readers are fairly imexpense and can be bought at most any office supply store, etc...
