I maintain a lab of 19 iMac 27" computers (18,3 2017 models) running macOS 12.5 (having been updated over the years). The SD card readers on over half of them have stopped working. I have not found any solutions yet, and it seems wrong that these simple devices should malfunction this way.
Web search reveals this to be a fairly common problem.
Does Apple have any recommendations?
Finally found a ridiculously simple solution elsewhere in Apple forum. Thank you John Galt!
Reset the SMC (System Management Controller). Guess how? Shut down and pull the power plug out for a minute. Replace and power back on. Voila, they all work again.

The card slots can be worn or damaged, if they are used a lot or abused.
I also suggest getting some corded USB card readers for most or all of the Mac’s in your lab.
I and others had this issue. I solved my issue by next update and only used Sandisk cards as some others would not work. Also if you use an external card reader then no issue.
