How can I find out who is on a group text message set up by someone else?

How can I find out who is on a group message set up by someone else? I often receive texts from friends thinking I am communicating only with them, but then comments start appearing in my texts from unknown phone numbers! The text phone number does not appear to be a group text. How can this be stopped?

At the very top of the message thread it tells you the number of people, if it is a single person it will show the name, if multiple people it will show the number.

I would love if that were always true, but when senders don't set up a list of recipients the only name that shows up is the single sending individual. Then, I find comments from others variously though out the text. If there are telephone numbers associated with those comments and I do not have those numbers in my Contacts, then I have no idea who is commenting.
