I can't update because Mojave will not update to Big Sur because my drive is not the right format

Now what? I can't update because Mojave will not update to Big Sur because my drive is not the right format. Apple apparently has just started abandoning customers that have been loyal for over 30 years.

Hello, Royle-Grimes.

Big Sur requires an APFS volume for installation. Your current startup volume can be converted non-destructively, on the fly by using Disk Utility while booted in Recovery mode.

Non-Destructive APFS Conversion

Restart the Mac into Recovery Mode.

Launch Disk utility.

Click-select your named boot volume—the default name is Macintosh HD —(Not the physical drive above it.)

In the Disk Utility> Edit menu> select “Convert to APFS"

This is a surprising fast conversion. It is always recommend to have a current back in the odd circumstance something goes sideways.

If the drive does not convert - make a Time Machine Backup asap and keep it safe. One will have to wipe the entire drive from a USB Installer of At Least Catalina and re-format to APFS and then Install Big Sur also from USB Installer. All the creations of USB Drive will have to be done on a Computer that Qualifies from Both Catalina and Big Sur.

The Present installed Mojave is what 10.14.1 or 10.14.2 or 10.14.3 ? There is the issue - the drive was not kept updated all the way to higher versions on Mojave ?

What year is your Mac? There is no issue going from Mojave to Big Sur if your Mac is capable for the upgrade. Formatting is not the issue.

The list of Mac models that are compatible with macOS Big Sur are:

  • MacBook Air (2013 and newer)
  • MacBook Pro (late 2013 and newer)
  • MacBook (2015 and newer)
  • iMac (2014 and newer)
  • iMac Pro (2017 and newer)
  • Mac mini (2014 and newer)
  • Mac Pro (2013 and newer)
