I can listen to music on my iPhone that's streamed from wav-format files stored on a local NAS. (I do this without iTunes and without copying music from the NAS.)
But I don't know how to play a sequence of NAS music files, eg all files in a NAS directory. Is there a way to do this?

I would think you would be better served by using a dedicated media player on your NAS to do this. I know my Synology NAS has a number of them to choose from. You can then access this server from your iPhone if desired. Although I'm a bit confused on why you would want to use your phone for playback.

The result is a list of folders and music files. When I click on one of the latter, it plays.
Typically, when you stream audio, you need both a media "server" & a media "player." In this case, I am assuming the latter is your iPhone. A NAS can provide both media storage & potentially can run apps that can perform as a server. AFAIK, the Files app on your iPhone is not a media server.
So, how exactly are you able to stream to your iPhone from your NAS now?

Ok, I now see how you are attempting this. I can certainly duplicate the effort with my 2nd gen iPhone SE. My guess is that the Files app was not designed to be a media player even though it has a rudimentary ability to play single audio files. Maybe a future update will "fix" that. However, anything is possible, and someone else here at the ASC, who has a more throughout understanding of the Files app functionality will chime in and let us know.

Local streaming is free; there are some additional features available through a paid upgrade, including remote/out of home access to your content.

I've got hearing aids that bluetooth to my iPhone, so they function like earbuds. I also have Sonos that streams from the NAS when I want to listen thru speakers.
ps: I use the "Files" app to connect to the NAS and stream music from it.
ps: This is all done on my iPhone 12 Pro.
Is there a music player (media server) I can install on my iPhone that can connect to the NAS?
I will second Lyssa's comments on trying Plex. It's what I have been using for years and it seems to just get "better" with each update.
Ah, makes total sense. Wasn't tying to "challenge" your playback method ... just curious.
