streaming music from a NAS using Files

I will second Lyssa's comments on trying Plex. It's what I have been using for years and it seems to just get "better" with each update.

I would think you would be better served by using a dedicated media player on your NAS to do this. I know my Synology NAS has a number of them to choose from. You can then access this server from your iPhone if desired. Although I'm a bit confused on why you would want to use your phone for playback.

Typically, when you stream audio, you need both a media "server" & a media "player." In this case, I am assuming the latter is your iPhone. A NAS can provide both media storage & potentially can run apps that can perform as a server. AFAIK, the Files app on your iPhone is not a media server.

So, how exactly are you able to stream to your iPhone from your NAS now?

Ok, I now see how you are attempting this. I can certainly duplicate the effort with my 2nd gen iPhone SE. My guess is that the Files app was not designed to be a media player even though it has a rudimentary ability to play single audio files. Maybe a future update will "fix" that. However, anything is possible, and someone else here at the ASC, who has a more throughout understanding of the Files app functionality will chime in and let us know.

Ah, makes total sense. Wasn't tying to "challenge" your playback method ... just curious.
