Deleting selected text

I can no longer delete an individual text message on my iphone, When I hold down on message, then choose More. Even if I select only one message, if I hit the trash can, it deletes my whole thread. I only get Delete All at top left, no option to delete selected text. I lose everything. My software is up to date.
