Apple Watch won’t pair because the update won’t download

I reset my Apple Watch and trying to pair it to my new iPhone. It’s asking me to download and install the software update. The update will not download. It says “5 days remaining” or it will pause. My iPhone is connected to wifi and the watch is plugged in next to my iPhone.

Yes that is way beyond normal time or sensible expectation. Which model are you updating and would you know which version of watchOS is on it presently?
