None of the was suggested would unlock my IPod, meaning toggling the on/lock switch and holding down two buttons for 8 seconds, or just holding down 2 buttons for 8 seconds.
Help! I want my music.

The video of opening the case was what made me decide to have a pro fix it. It was numerous steps with several tools I’ve never seen. Figured I break the case if I tried it.

I suspect the hold switch is broken. These can be replaced but see Recover media from an iPod - Apple Community first.

Thanks for your reply. I think the problem is a broken on/off switch.
After using the last resort Apple gave of restoring, which removes all content, and reloading (syncing with iTunes on my laptop), everything was fine until I tried to use it today. It’s locked again.
Now, how do I repair the on/off switch?
The hold switch assembly is also connected to the headphone jack. This is a fairly common repair along with batteries. You can buy the parts and do it yourself if so inclined or see what the local repair shops want to charge.

PS I live in Manhattan where there are numerous tech fix-it shops. Would you suggest I try one of them to fix my IPod Classic on/off switch?

I don't blame you. I've done several battery swap outs and the headphone/hold switch assembly a few times, but it is really tricky getting the case open cleanly.
