I cannot get my Apple Watch to pair on find my phone anyone help me

hello, I have an old series 2. it does not pair. I have reset the watch due to a forgotten passcode. on the iPhone it sees the watch and identifies the apple watch number but then the 6 digit verification code does not show up.
