phone won't enable "hey siri", but siri works fine manually

got a strange problem.

trying to enable the "update listening history" setting for Apple Music within the "home" app.

enabling it then asks to setup "hey siri" on the phone

however, no matter how many times i say "hey siri" it doesn't move past this screen.

the siri logo changes to show that it can hear me, but no matter what i do it won't progress.

siri works when i talk to it when i initiate it manually (holding power button), and my homepod mini responds to "hey siri" just fine.

any ideas what the problem is?

i've already looked at https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT207489 and this hasn't helped.

i've never had the "listen for hey siri" optioned enabled, this is the first time i'm trying to enable it.

Hi Chenks,

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities! Let see if we can get "Hey Siri" enabled on your iPhone. Since trying to set this up, has your iPhone been restarted? Sometime restarting gives your iPhone the refresh it needs. We see that iOS 14 is tagged in your post, be sure the latest one (iOS 14) is currently installed when you go to Settings > General > About.

Restart your iPhone

You can also troubleshoot your microphone to confirm it is picking up sound: If the microphones on your iPhone aren't working.

Hope that helps!

Chenks,

Thank you for that information. Have you checked for any restrictions that may be affecting this? Since this is happening with Apple Music, you can go to Settings > Screen Time > Media & Apple Music and confirm that "Allow Changes" is selected.

Use Screen Time on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If this continues, you may want to reach out to Apple Support for further assistance. Depending on your region, you may be able to reach them here: Get Support.

Have a good one!

yes the phone has been restarted numerous time.

and it's running iOS 14.6 - the iPhone is only 2 months old and was set up as a new phone (not restored from a backup).

i did not have an iPhone before this.

the microphone is working fine, as i mentioned Siri works fine if i initiate it manually (holding the power button). and the confirm this, when i say "Hey Siri" during the setup, the Siri logo changes to show that it is hearing my speak.

sorry, there may be confusion here. it's not happening with Apple Music as such, it's just that Apple Music requires the "listen for hey siri" to be enabled and configured before "update listening history" can be enabled.

it's not an apple music issue though.

and i have already attempted to speak to Apple Support about this (via Messages) and to be honest they were less then useless. it was apparent that the person i was speaking to didn't understand the issue, had very poor grasp of english, and ended up sending me support articles for ipads! in the end they said they couldn't help any further and told me to factory reset the iphone. if that's what apple support has become then it's a might fall from grace.

to try and clarify the issue, ignore any thing about Apple Music.

i go to settings > siri and search > enable "listen for hey siri".

i get the "setup hey siri screen", i tap continue

it asks me to "say "hey siri" into your iphone"

no matter how many times i say it, it keeps saying "siri didn't quite get that. try again"

the microphone orange indicator is on, and the siri logo moves to show that it can hear me, however it won't accept me saying "hey siri".

if it press and hold the power button to initiate sir manually, it has no problem hearing me and undestanding what i'm saying.

with respect i don't think "multiple" troubleshooting steps have taken place yet.

other than confirming that the phone has been restarted (as suggested in the first reply) i can't see any futher relevant troubleshooting steps being offered.

in a previous reply one specialist said to go to "Settings > Screen Time > Media & Apple Music" which is a setting that doesn't exist. there is no "media & apple music" otpion within the screen time settings page - however it would not be relevant anyway as it's not an apple music issue.

let's say, for example, i carried out a factory reset and that made no difference, what would be the next suggestion?

i should note that my homepod mini has no issues with me saying "hey siri" to it.

phone won't enable "hey siri", but siri works fine manually
