homepod mini siri fails simple questions

Per an earlier post here, I see that siri connected to the homepod mini is not as sophisticated as siri for iphones. However, even with simple questions siri homepod says to ask again from my iphone. Yet the homepod can still hear when I ask siri iphone. Any fix for working with siri under these extreme limitations?

Make the request directly on the iPhone. From Use Siri on iPhone - Apple Support:

Activate Siri with a button

Do one of the following:

On an iPhone with Face ID: Press and hold the side button.
On an iPhone with a Home button: Press and hold the Home button.
EarPods: Press and hold the center or call button.
