Possible Malware

Two suspicious applications were created in my applications folder around the time I updated to MacOS 13.6 from an earlier version of High Sierra. The two applications were named "Υπομνήσεις.app" and "调度中心.app". I was unable to drag them into the Trash - they stayed in the applications folder. I used an application (Find Any File) that allowed me to move them the Trash. When I tried to empty the Trash, a dialog box informed me that the applications were a part of Mac OS and could not be deleted.

Does anyone know anything about these applications?

The names of those apps translate to “reminders” and “dispatch center.” I suspect that these apps are reminders and mission control, which are built into macOS and are completely legitimate. That would at least explain why they can’t be deleted. So maybe the app names are just in the wrong language.

Try checking that your Mac is using the right language: https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/mac-help/mh26684/mac

And then you could try some more general fixes:

  1. Disk Utility first aid: https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT210898
  2. Boot into safe mode: Shut down the Mac, then turn it on while holding the shift key. Now restart normally.

And if you’re worried about Malware, there is a free app called “Malwarebytes” which can be downloaded here: https://malwarebytes.com.

Yes, I imagine that you would no longer be able to use reminders and mission control if you deleted the apps.

If nothing I suggested above fixes it, then you can try reinstalling macOS by holding command + r at startup and choosing “reinstall macOS.”

I’m also curious to know, do you still have the English “reminders” and “mission controls” apps on your Mac?

Thank you for your explanation. I kind of reached the same conclusion after searching the internet. I found another case of someone having similar problems wit the Υπομνήσεις.app application (https://superuser.com/questions/1327021/finder-shows-malicious-application-terminal-does-not/1327031).

What I can't figure out is how and why the names of these, and only these, applications appear in foreign characters, and why they are labeled in different languages.

If I do delete these applications does that mean I will no longer be able to use Reminders and Mission Control?
