How do I know when to change batteries?

Check the Battery Health on your device.

Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health.

If Battery Health says "Service", that means it is time to get your battery changed.

Also, you can tap into Battery Health and it shows you some recommendations.

Apple considers an iPhone to require a battery replacement if it cannot maintain, at least, an 80% charge after 500 full recharging cycles.
