I can't go trough passcode or fingerprint on iPhone iOS 14.6

My iPhone has been updated to iOS 14.6 and I cannot get past the demand for a passcode or fingerprint. I NEED TO USE MY PHONE TO CALL MY COUSIN WHO IS IN HOSPITAL. CAN YOU HELP ME PLEASE? My phone is now essentially "out of service" and I don't know how to make a call on it now. There is no need for me to have either a passcode or fingerprint entry to the phone. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

All I can suggest is that you follow the steps in:

In the time you've been posting in this thread, you could have been most of the way through restoring your phone. It will certainly take less time to restore your phone than it will to have a landline installed.

Restore your phone, restore your back up and your good to go.

That is assuming the problem is you don't know the password. If the problem is with the screen or something else, it may not be so easy. But as you have yet to actually explain the problem, I'm making my best guess.

Ok, let's be friends! This is what happened since I last wrote. I assume because I answered 'no' so many times to passcode and fingerprint, it went to an option to remove the 14.6 download, which I did and that restored the phone to what it was and I called my cousin, who should be fine, I'm glad to say. (He's 3,000 miles from here). It seems to me that it shouldn't take over 1/2 an hour to get an option not to accept a passcode or fingerprint - old style Apple would've had that available right away. Thank you Idris, for explaining the flip phone remark; I understand now. And what I meant by "can't get past the screens" was that I was literally trapped with no exit options and it lasted 30 minutes +. The passcode and fingerprint sign-ups felt ad infinitum and because I was so worried about my cousin I felt awful. It's too risky to record your fingerprint where it could be used for any nefarious reason. Thank you for trying to help and your good intentions.

If the phone is disabled, which it might as well be, the solution is to wipe it clean and start over. That does not make sense. This is preventing me from speaking with a family member who needs support and I will never forget this. Does anyone remember when we just picked up a phone and made a call? This is way, way out of hand.

Sorry, Tim, this is not directed at you and I know you're trying to be helpful. But seriously, hundreds of dollars are paid for a phone - when they used to cost around $30 and now the producer, Apple, stop me from using the product to obey rules that I do not need?

I have never used a password to access this iPhone iOS 14.6. I didn't on my Steve Jobs' phone either. It impedes me using the phone in emergency, which has a negative impact. After this update to 14.6, I cannot get past screens demanding a fingerprint or passcode. And there are no instructions for how to install a passcode either. This is threatening my safety and wellbeing and it should be easy to bypass, if you can appreciate where I'm coming from?

Yes. It does make sense. It's a matter of securing your data.

Then go buy a flip phone.

Phones never cost "around $30". They cost more like $300-$700. You never saw those prices because the cellular carriers subsidized the cost in order to get your monthly business.

You still haven't understood what the problem is. I CANNOT GET PAST THE SCREENS TWO DEMANDS FOR A PASSCODE OR A FINGERPRINT. Your answers are not helpful. I have switched the phone on and off and it's no dice, similar to the responses here. Also you lack of understanding with the sarcastic replies is uncalled for. Oh, go buy a flip phone and you still haven't answered the question. THAT IS NOT HOW YOU HELP SOMEONE.

I have asked you, at least twice, for more details and explained why any answers I give might not be the right ones without more information.

What do you mean you can't get past the screens "two demands for passcode or fingerprint"? Do you not know the passcode? Or is something wrong with the screen and attempting to enter the passcode doesn't work? Or something else?

My recommendation to buy a flip phone was not sarcastic. I know lots of people who prefer the simplicity of a basic phone to a smartphone.

I'm so glad to hear you got your phone working and were able to contact your cousin.

Your fingerprint itself is not being recorded. See here for an explanation of how TouchID works and why it is secure:

About Touch ID advanced security technology - Apple Support

That being said, there may be some fourth amendment issues around TouchID. The courts have ruled that an individual cannot be required to give up a passcode. But, the decisions are less clear on being required to stick out one's finger. So, definitely, your position has merit.

I would still personally recommend that you have a passcode on your phone but, in the end, that's up to you. If you're comfortable with the idea that any data on the phone could be viewed by anyone who picks it up, then, you don't need one. I keep a lot of stuff on my phone, including work documents that I would not want other people to have access to (and no one really needs to know how many pictures I have of my cats).

Best of luck.
