Why do I have to sign in to the App Store to download anything?

On Big Sur, why do I have to provide my Apple ID and password every time I want to download new apps from the App Store? If I want to download two apps on the same session, I have to sign in twice. I am already signed into my Apple ID anyway, and my name already appears at the bottom left of the App Store anyway. Surely it should simply see that I am signed in already and download?

Hey Tim St.Clair, thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're constantly being asked to sign into the Mac App Store, even after you've just signed in to download another app. This can be sorted out by going into System Preferences > Apple ID > Media & Purchases. In here, you can manage your App Store sign in requirements. For more information, please check out: Require a password for App Store and iTunes purchases - Apple Support

We hope that helps.
