Is keeping the power plugged in while using the M1 MacBook Air in clamshell mode bad for battery life?

Yes to both answers. If you sue it most of the time or all the time plugged into the charger it will eventually learn that a start putting the charging on hold when plugged in, unless of course the battery requires charging.

The battery management in your MacBook Air will "learn" your habits and

will put charging "on hold" when necessary. To insure this, in System Preferences->Battery,

select "Battery" on the left and make sure to check "Optimized battery charging".
