MacBook Air m1 not recognizing flash drive

My new MacBook Air m1 is not recognizing my SanDisk Ultra USB-C flash drive. The response to this same question, referring to an Apple document, did not fix my problem. Both of my USB-C ports are recognizing my power cable, which is the only USB-C connection I've made since I unpacked this MacBook Air, but neither port recognizes my new flash drive.

How is the device being connected to the computer ? Is it connected Directly to the computer ? Is the a USB-C HUB being connected to computer and USB Drive connect to Hub ? In what file format is the USB Drive. If not formatted as something Apple OS can understand - it will not work. If using the USB Drive only for Apple Computers, suggest Reformatting the Drive in Disk Utilities and format as HFS Journaled and GUID Partition Map.
