Gmail on iPad

My ISP is quitting mail service. So I'm going to Gmail. I can logon to Google apps in the Cloud just fine. But when putting the Gmail client on my iPad it has been a nightmare. I've tried a Google generated password and a user created password in Settings for my Gmail account. Typed them all in to incoming server (imap) and outgoing server (SMTP) countless times. But regardless of the fact that I'm using the very same credentials to logon to Gmail in the Cloud successfully, the client app says "No password provided for Gmail". I've spent an entire day trying to get this to work to no avail.

Any idea what is going on? Have other iPad users encountered this with the Gmail client app?

You may use Apple’s Mail application to access your gmail account.
